Branyan Passes Physical, Officially Signs with Indians
Russell Branyan has officially signed with the Cleveland Indians after passing his physical today. Branyan signed a one-year $2 million contract with the option of up to $1 million more in incentives, and a mutual $5 million option for 2011. Branyan will be competing for a spot at first base with rookie Matt LaPorta, as well as be in the mix for an outfield position, possibly competing with Michael Brantley and could also be the back-up DH behind Travis Hafner. Branyan has the potential to be the big bat the Indians have been looking for the past three seasons since Hafner injured his shoulder and saw his numbers decline. However, Branyan is very prone to striking out, and has had injury woes of his own, most recently a back injury which shut him down for the last month of the 2009 season in Seattle.
To make room for Branyan, the Indians optioned Chris Gimenez to Triple-A Columbus, though he will remain in camp as a non-roster invitee. Branyan grew up in the Indians organization and seems to be happy to be back with the club for the fourth time in his 12 plus year major league career.
