Reds rally, but fall to Phillies, 4-3, in 12Schneider’s walk-off homer lifts Philadelphia
The NL-Central leading Reds (49-38) took a 1-0 lead in the first on Joey Votto’s league-high 22nd homer. The Phillies (44-40) tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Shane Victorino went deep for the 14th time this season. Philly took a 2-1 advantage in the third on an error and carried that lead into the eighth. Cincinnati knotted the game when Brandon Phillips struck out on a wild pitch and Joey Votto was able to score all the way from second base. The game wouldn’t stay tied long, as Wilson Valdez led off the bottom of the inning with a triple and Jimmy Rollins plated him with a sac fly to make it 3-2.
Brad Lidge had a chance to nail it down in the ninth, but blew the save opportunity. Miguel Cairo came through with a two out double to square things at 3-3. Nelson Figueroa (2-1) didn’t allow a hit in two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the victory for Philadelphia. Jordan Smith (1-2) suffered the loss for Cincinnati. Each team used six pitchers in the contest. Shane Victorino went 3-for-5 to lead the Phillies. The Reds were led by Joey Votto and Corky Miller, who had two hits apiece. The series will continue tonight in the city of “Brotherly Love”.
