The Rockies have had a season with injuries and lack of production from players such as Brad Hawpe and Todd Helton. Now with the 2nd half under way they are looking to catch the San Diego Padres and return to the playoffs. It seemed there was something missing earlier in the season as the Rockies dealt with injuries from the starting rotation such as Jeff Francis, and Jorge DeLaRosa, and with Todd Helton, and Carlos Gonzalez. The Rockies are in 3rd place currently with a 51-42 record, 3.5 games out of first and it is time to make a run. Since the start of the second half the Rockies have dealt with command issues from Jorge DeLa Rosa and former ace Jeff Francis. With Tulowitzki having been gone for a while and the uncertain future of Todd Helton, here are players who have been named as trade possibilities this season.
Dan Uggla, 2B, Florida Marlins- The Rockies have been linked to Uggla for a while and they did try to trade for him last offseason as part of a deal that would have shipped 2B Clint Barmes to Florida. This is a fit and profiles as a right- handed power bat in my opinion but questions remain with the contract and the Marlins willingness to move him. I saw earlier the Rockies would want him to play 1 st and 3 rd base but Uggla is not fond of playing there. Will not be eligible for free agency until after the 2011 season.
2010 Stats- (As of 7-21-10) - .274 Average 16HR 52 RB
Jorge Cantu, 1B/3B, Florida Marlins- A teammate of Uggla who the Rockies have been linked to for the past week. Another right handed bat and Cantu can play 1 st with the uncertain future of Helton and can help out at third but is eligible for free agency after this season.
2010 Season- (As of 7-21-10) - .261 Average 10 HR 53 RBI’s
Ty Wigginton, 1B/2B/3B, Baltimore Orioles- A righty who has had a good season and was an all-star this year. Can play corner infield positions as well as second base positions the Rockies could use help at. Will be a free agent this off season.
2010 Season- (As of 7-21-10) - .250 Average 16HR 48RBI’s
Pitching:
Dan Haren, SP, Arizona Diamondbacks- A proven front line starter who has won 14+ games in the past five season with the D’Backs and Athletics. Would help in the rotation with the struggles of Jeff Francis and Jorge DeLa Rosa. Not sure what Arizona’s asking price would be with dealing their ace starting pitcher in the division. Has had some struggle this season. Been through three organizations throughout his career.
2010 Season- (as of 7-21-10) - 7-8 4.60 ERA
Octavio Dotel, CL, Pittsburgh Pirates- Has had closing experience this season with the Pirates. Rockies could use another arm in the bullpen to complement Huston Street, Rafeal Betancourt, Matt Belisle and others.
2010 Season- (as of 7-22-10) - 2-2 4.62 ERA 20 SV/25 SVO
Kevin Gregg, CL, Toronto Blue Jays- A reliever who the Rockies have been linked to in the past offseason. Done well in the past in the bullpen and has been in the back of the bullpen including closer for three different teams. Another guy that would go well for the Rockies.
2010 Season- (as of 7-22-10) - 0-4 3.93 ERA 21 SV/25 SVO
