Houston Astros Opening Series: Lessons Learned

Houston Astros hats & merchandise Yes, the Astros got swept by the Phillies, yes Wandy Rodriguez and Bud Norris look awful, yes, Brandon Lyon got the Astros first win in his arm, and he lost the game.

Breaking down the three games, we can say that we have learn: the good, the bad and the ugly of this first three games..

The Good:

  • Brett Myers: Simply he knows how to pitch. He changes speeds, he fights every pitch, and he is a gamer.

  • Angel Sanchez: Had a good hitting approach, and show that he can hit.

  • Carlos Lee: Last year have his first RBI until his 54 at bat. This year already has a 1 HR 3B and 4 RBI.

  • Hunter Pence. Last year also started slow, and this 2011 has at least a hit in every game, including a 3-4 Saturday with a HR.

  • Mark Melancon – He had two appearances and not allowed a run.

The Bad

  • Bud Norris- is really frustrating watch this guy, with that stuff , pitch great to one hitter and pitch bad to another. Norris quickly can become from a learning young talent, to an inconsistent veteran. I hope the pitching coach can find a solution there.

  • Bill Hall: The first game really hit the ball twice very hard, one at the edge of the wall, but the last two days, it was K,K,K. The good news is that Hall is a better hitter then that.

  • Chris. Johnson: At least it was a good sign the two hits of Sunday, but the first two games it was awful.

The ugly

  • Wandy Rodriguez: He has just sign the best contract of his life, he is not a rookie, and he has the stuff to pitch well in the majors. But Wandy appears not to be good under pressure. For the Astros to be respectable in 2011, his veterans have to be good right away.

  • Brandon Lyon. He had a bad outing, but in my opinion is not the same case as Wandy. I think Lyon will get over this quickly.

The good news is: The Astros are out of Philly, the bad: Cincinnati is next.
