Texas Rangers Sneak by Toronto for Darvish Negotiations
Until a day or two ago, everyone seemed to believe that the Toronto Blue Jays had all but clinched negotiation rights for Yu Darvish. Texas had expressed a strong interest, but they apparently put on a good poker face about their bid. According to MLB, the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan accepted a posting fee from Texas for approximately $51.7 million. Texas has thirty days to officially sign Darvish. If they don’t come to an agreement by January 18 th, Darvish will return to his team in Japan, and Texas will keep the $51.7 million posting fee. I can’t imagine that the Texas Rangers would let him go after a process like this one.
The Rangers have focused heavily on winning the posting fee bid, so they have not dealt with signing anyone else. Acquiring Darvish would mean some changes in their pitching rotation. Colby Lewis will be a free agent after the 2012 season, so he will likely be the best option for a trade. Yu Darvish is an exciting pitcher to watch. Footage of his pitching is impressive, but remember that he has not pitched in MLB. I still have to wonder if he will be worth all of the buzz.
