Indians Get Hafner Back, Fall to Royals 6-3

The Cleveland Indians began their final road trip of the season on Friday night in Kansas City with Justin Masterson on the mound and Travis Hafner back in their line-up. Unfortunately neither man could do anything to help the Tribe’s sputtering offense and the last-place Indians dropped their 89 th game of the season in a 3-6 loss to the Royals, who will likely finish the season in third place in the American League Central Division. The Indians and Royals both had 10 hits in the game, but the Royals took better advantage of getting runners home, something the Indians have struggled with all season long.

Masterson pitched well enough, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings of work while walking 2 and striking out 3 batters. However Masterson has seen little or no offense from the Indians in the majority of his starts over the past two seasons and he was forced to take his 15 th loss of the year as the Tribe once again failed to find a way to drive in runs when they had golden opportunities.

The Indians will continue their series with the Royals on Saturday with Ubaldo Jimenez (9-16, 5.43 ERA) facing off against Kansas City’s Will Smith (5-8, 5.08 ERA). Both men have combined for one win since August 14 th, so it will be interesting to see which of them outdoes the other on Saturday evening. Entering Saturday’s contest, the Indians are now 62-89, 19.5 games out of first place and sit ½ game behind the Twins in last place in the AL Central.
