With pitchers and catchers officially on-hand in Goodyear, Arizona Sunday, the Cleveland Indians’ front office has not stopped trying to find pieces to bolster their sketchy starting rotation. With players reporting and work-outs set to begin, the Tribe’s brass decided to take a chance on another veteran pitcher, signing right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka to a one-year, Minor-League contract with an invitation to Spring Training. Matsuzaka will compete for one of the spots in the Indians’ starting rotation, and is being reunited with the manager who led him to a World Series while a member of the Boston Red Sox.

Matsuzaka, 32, will reportedly make a base salary of $1.5 million should he make the Tribe’s roster and could see as much as $4 million depending on his performance this season. Matsuzaka failed last season in his comeback attempt with the Red Sox following Tommy John surgery in 2011. In 11 starts, Dice-K went 1-7 with an 8.28 ERA after he rejoined the Red Sox in June; prior to that he went 1-4 with a 3.32 ERA in 13 minor-league rehab starts. The Indians will put him into competition with Corey Kluber, Zach McAllister, David Huff, Scott Kazmir, Carlos Carrasco (himself coming off Tommy John surgery last year,) and Trevor Bauer for the fourth and fifth spots in their rotation. Matsuzaka has a career record of 50-37 in Major-League play with his best season coming in 2008 when he went 18-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 29 starts for the Red Sox.
