Fight for Indians’ Final Rotation Spot Down to Two

Tribe sends Kubel and Bauer to minor league camp as Kazmir and Carrasco battle for fifth spot in rotation.

The battle for the final spot in the Cleveland Indians’ starting rotation is down to Scott Kazmir and Carlos Carrasco as the Tribe assigned Corey Kluber and Trevor Bauer to minor league camp on Thursday. Carrasco looked solid in his outing against the Diamondbacks on Thursday afternoon, allowing four runs on eight hits in five frames of work. Kazmir tossed an identical game on Sunday against the Rangers’ Class A team as he continues to attempt a comeback with the Tribe after missing almost all of the last two seasons struggling to recover from a shoulder injury that shut him down on July 18, 2010.

Tribe skipper Terry Francona will likely make his decision on which of the two will win the final spot in the bullpen by the end of the weekend so that he can begin to set the rotation up for Opening Day on April 2 nd. Both would be in line to get at least one more start this spring as Opening Day starter Justin Masterson is expected to make an appearance on Friday when the Tribe takes on Arizona again, this time at their complex in Goodyear, Arizona. After that, Ubaldo Jimenez, Brett Myers and Zach McAllister are expect to start against Seattle, the Chicago Cubs and the Colorado Rockies respectively, so the next opportunity to see the fifth starter would be against the Oakland A’s on March 26th.
