The White Sox announced that they have invited 15 non-roster players to spring training, including some of the team's top prospects. This list includes outfielder Jordan Danks, 2009 first-round Draft pick Jared Mitchell, and infielders Brent Morel and C.J. Retherford.
Danks hit .266 with nine home runs and 41 RBIs in 103 games between Class-AA Birmingham and Class-A Winston-Salem. The 24-year-old brother of White Sox pitcher John Danks was a seventh round pick in the June 2008 First-Year Player Draft. Danks is currently ranked by Baseball America as the No. 5 prospect in the White Sox organization.
Another rising outfielder, Mitchell is currently ranked as the club's
top prospect by Baseball America. He hit .296, and was 34-115 with 12
doubles, two triples, and 10 RBIs in 34 games with Class-A Kannapolis
during his first professional season.
Morel took the lead offensively, earning the Arizona Fall League
batting title. The 22-year-old infielder hit .435 with 26 home runs
and 79 RBIs in 128 games with Class-A Winston-Salem.
Power hitter Retherford hit .297 with 10 home runs and 17 RBIs in 128
games for Class-AA Birmingham in 2009. He led the Minor League with 46
doubles and was named to the Southern League's midseason and
postseason All-Star teams.
Five other players agreed to Minor League deals with the Sox and also
received non-roster invites These include right-handed pitchers Greg
Aguino and Daniel Cabrera, left-handed pitcher Erick Threets,
infielder Freddie Bynum, and outfielder Jason Botts. Joining Danks,
Mitchell, and Retherford as the remaining six non-roster invitees are
catchers Miguel Gonzalez, Donny Lucy and Josh Phegley, outfielder Josh
Kroegar, left-handed pitcher Charlie Leesman, and right-handed pitcher
Ryan Braun who are already in the White Sox minor league system.
Pitchers and catchers report to Glendale, Ariz. Sunday, Feb. 21 with
the first full-squad workout on Friday, Feb. 26.
