Acta excited for Spring Training

Manny Acta gave a press conference Tuesday and had the following to say about this year’s club:

Acta stressed getting the team focused and aware of how they started the past few years. He mentioned that players sometimes are unaware of their spring training records, slow starts and other statistics because they are too focused on winning the ball game. He also stated that he would like to have the club put together with 7-10 days left in camp so that he can get the team on the field playing together and give them a chance to "go all out..... so we don't have to turn on a switch in Chicago."

The front office did have conversations about Jim Thome, but because the Indians do not have a place for him in the line up, they decided not to pursue him.

The starting rotation is his biggest concern heading into camp. He mentioned Carmona, Sowers and Laffey as being the guys who need to step forward and show consistency throughout camp.

Acta also gave high praise to this year’s inductee into the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame, Kenny Lofton during the press conference. Acta’s sense of humor once again came out when one reporter asked what position Acta played when he was teammates with Lofton in the Astros minor leagues, his response... “I was playing, uh, next to the cooler!”

Manny Acta was hired in October of 2009 to replace Eric Wedge as the Cleveland Indians manager. He previously managed the Washington Nationals from 2007-mid 2009 when he was dismissed after leading the team to three straight losing seasons, and posted a career record of 158-252 for the club.
