Indians Finally Break their Early Losing StreakAfter dropping their first two games to the Blue Jays making them 0-5 and the only winless team in the American League coming into Sunday the Indians managed to put together a win. The win featured home runs from Mark DeRosa and Travis Hafner. Trevor Crowe also got his first Major League hit in the form of a two-out, two-run double off of Blue Jays’ reliever Shawn camp. Anthony Reyes pitched a solid six innings for the Tribe giving up only one run until the sixth inning when he gave up three. Jensen Lewis pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up no runs and striking out one. Kerry Wood came on in the top of the ninth and struck all three Blue Jays hitters he faced.
The Indians will travel to Kansas City for a three-game series against the Royals beginning on Monday. On Monday the Royals will be pitching Zack Grienke and the Indians will counter with Fausto Carmona. Grienke is 1-0 on the season and has yet to give up any runs. Carmona is 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA after a rough start in Texas. On Tuesday the Royals will be pitching Kyle Davies who shut out the White Sox in his first start this year but received a no decision for his efforts. Carl Pavano will make his second try at a win for the Indians on Wednesday after he was roughed up in Texas for nine runs in just one inning pitched giving him an 81.00 ERA. On Wednesday the Royals will send Sydney Ponson to the mound with a record of 0-1 and an ERA of 6.00. The Indians have not announced their starter for Wednesday at this point.
Travis Hafner has made a powerful return to the lineup with three home runs so far on the year. The Indians are hoping he is able to keep his offense going and that this is a sign he has regained full strength in his problem shoulder.
