Trade rumors and free agent signings

Even though the World Series has yet to be settled, trade rumors have already been swirling between many of the teams. There are also a handful of players that could bring in huge contracts as free agents.

The name that has been thrown around the most is Jake Peavy. Peavy has 4 years left on his current contract and has been put on the open market. Peavy has a no-trade clause but would consider waiving it for several teams. Those teams include the Astros, Braves, Dodgers, and Cardinals. Peavy has a contract that would be considered a bargain for a pitcher of his caliber.

So far it appears Atlanta is in the lead as they can offer the most for Peavy. The Astros are a good fit, but don’t have a very strong farm system to deal from. My prediction is he ends up in Atlanta as they can put the best offer on the table.

Atlanta seems to be the most active this year as they have about 40-45 million to spend. Atlanta is looking for 2 starting pitchers and a power hitting left fielder. Peavy could fill one spot, while Derek Lowe, A.J. Burnett, or Jon Garland could fill the second spot. Pat Burrell and Adam Dunn are free agents but I don’t see them going to Atlanta. I think it is more likely that they acquire a left fielder via trade. Delmon Young’s name has been thrown in some trade talks and could be on the move if Atlanta wants to part with a middle infielder.

The biggest free agents are C.C. Sabathia and Mark Teixeira. Sabathia says he wants to stay in Milwaukee and the Brewers will give him their best offer. It is almost certain that their offer will be beat by the Yankees in their quest to land him. Mark Teixeira will probably not get his money from the Angels and likely spots for him are Boston and New York.

Key free agents that could be on the move are Derek Lowe, A.J. Burnett, Adam Dunn, Pat Burrell, Francisco Rodriguez, Vladimir Guerrero and Ben Sheets. The team that looks to come out with the most is the Yankees. This is simply because they have the most money to spend and can simply out bid every other team. A projected pitching rotation for New York next year is C.C. Sabathia, Ben Sheets, A.J. Burnett, Joba Chamberlain, and Mike Mussina. They have also been expected to sign Mark Teixeira. This would be great for Yankee fans, but a sad day in baseball for the rest of the major league.
