Padres Lose to Astros, Face the Manny Circus NextThe Padres came home after a series win over the Rangers to face the other Texas team, the Astros. With two superb pitching performances the games before, the Padres turned to Josh Geer to keep the team in the game. He did, but the problem was, Roy Oswalt on the other side was keeping his team in the ballgame even better. Oswalt threw a complete-game two-hitter to down the Padres, 3-1. Josh Banks started the second game, allowing only three runs in seven innings. But with the way Mike Hampton was pumping out strikes on the other side, it didn’t look like the Padres would be able to overcome a 3-1 lead. Enter the Astros’ bullpen. In the bottom of the seventh, the Padres got three runs on five hits to take the lead against reliever Chris Sampson. It was a great rally. In the ninth, Heath Bell came in to save the game. Of course, he had to make it interesting before sending everyone home. He walked two batters with two outs, but finally got the last out. And the Padres took the second game of the series. In the third game, Walter Silva was given a second chance. With all the injuries to the starting rotation, the Padres have been experimenting with different pitchers, seeing who could stick. Silva has struggled terribly, but the Padres were willing to look at him at least one more time. He threw five innings, allowing six runs, but only three earned. The story of this game is Chase Headley’s error. He was playing third base, his natural position, though he has been playing left field. He got a ground ball with the bases loaded, and had a moment of hesitation. That’s all the Astros needed. He threw wide of first, and as the bases cleared, the throw home got past the catcher. It was terrible. The Astros took the game easily, 7-1.
In the fourth game, the Padres sent their new ace to the mound to hopefully salvage a series split. Kevin Correia didn’t have it, though. He allowed six runs in five innings, and with this Padres offense, there’s no way they can come back from that big of a lead. No one really cares about the result of the game, though. They care about the bees. Yep, in the top of the ninth, a swarm of bees emerged out of the left field line. A 50 minute “bee” delay ensued as a beekeeper was called in to take care of the bees. It was pretty crazy!! But the Padres went on to lose, 7-2, thus losing the series. Oh well. Next are the Dodgers, and the return of the Manny. It’s going to be a crazy weekend in San Diego, but I just hope the Padres can spoil some of the Dodgers’ fans fun and win the series. Not likely with this Padres team, but we can hope. GO PADRES!!
