Royals take final series before All-Star break

Friday saw the Royals and Mariners kick off their final series before the All-Star break. Felix Hernandez returned from his DL stint and pitched lights-out against KC for 4 strong innings, not even giving up a hit until the 5th. In that inning, however, the Royals managed 3 runs against King Felix, aided by doubles from David DeJesus and Mike Aviles. Kansas City Royals hats & merchandiseLuke Hochevar kept the Mariners guessing all night with 7 strong innings of 5 hit, 1 ER ball, and Joakim Soria collected his 25th save for the Royals win. Jose Guillen sat out this game with a knot in the back of his neck against his former club, but hoped to be back in the starting lineup for the rest of the series.

Royals Magic

KC had another sense for the dramatic this night as, again, late inning heroics swept them past the Mariners 4-3. Raul Ibanez had a HR for the M’s against his former club, but it was Gil Meche pitching 6 2/3 innings against HIS former club that got the Royals the win. This win saw 2B Mark Grudzielanek collect his 2,000 th hit with an RBI single in the first inning. The play of the game came late though in the bottom of the ninth inning, as David DeJesus hit a walk off, game winning 2 run homerun off flamethrowing closer Brandon Morrow. It was Morrow’s second blown save, and DeJesus’s 10th HR on the year, as he continues to be clutch, leading the league in hitting with runners in scoring position.

Sweep?

The Royals looked for a much needed sweep and a big momentum burst going into the All-Star break against the M’s Sunday afternoon in K.C. The Achilles heel this time for the Royals was their defense, in the 9th inning in a 3-3 ballgame. Catcher John Buck threw a ball away, with Adrian Beltre in a run-down, allowing him to score the game winning run. Mike Aviles continues to swing a hot stick with a 3-4 1 RBI day, as KC fell in their last game before the All-Star break. They hope to get on the right track and pick up a few games as they conclude the 2nd half against the Chicago White Sox, Friday, on the South Side. It should be a great first game as ace Zack Grienke tows the stripe for KC against the always tough Mark Buehrle.
