Royals Correspondent: Royals/Rays Part II

The Royals kicked off a 4 game series on a good note at home against the Rays, with a 4-2 victory. Matt Garza, who has struggled often against K.C., took the loss for Tampa Bay as he allowed 4 runs on 8 hits in just 5 IP. Gil Meche, again proving why he should be the Royals number 1 starter, pitched 7 strong innings allowing 5 hits and 0 ER to improve his record on the year to 8-9. Joakim Soria got his 27 th save of the year, despite allowing 1 earned run in the 9 th. David DeJesus went 2-3 with a double and a run scored for K.C. Kansas City Royals hats & merchandise

The second game of the series went to Tampa Bay, as Edwin Jackson pitched five solid innings for the Rays in their 5-3 win over the Royals and starter Brian Bannister. Carlos Pena continues to hit Royals pitching well as he homered again tonight. Brian Bannister’s most recent performance should surely raise the clamor of fans who think AAA hotshot Carlos Rosa deserves a shot. Bannister definitely needs to make some adjustments as he fell to 7-9 on the year with a 5.40 ERA. Jose Guillen had another 0-4 game, dropping his average to .260 on the year.

Game 3 of the series seemed to be a mirror image of game 2, as the Rays took yet another 5-3 ballgame. This time it was Ray’s ace Scott Kazmir pitching 5 strong innings of 2 run ball. This game was delayed for almost 2 hours, as thunderstorms swept through “The K” flooding the outfield warning track. The game resumed and saw the Royals middle relievers give up 3 ER to the Rays, as Troy Percival got his 22 nd save of the year to close out the game. Jose Guillen snapped his skid with a 1-4 RBI game, but there was cause for concern when Guillen said he felt his groin “snap”. Guillen who has been battling groin injuries all year went on to miss the final game in the series.

Game 4 Sunday in Kansas City saw the Royals bounce back with an impressive 6-1 victory over Andy Sonnanstine and the Rays. Sonnanstine gave up 5 ER to KC in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Billy Butler continues to be a 2 nd half hitting star for the Royals, with his 6 th homerun of the year, and 5 th since the all star break. Butler also added a double and drove in 4 Kansas City runs. David DeJesus added 2 doubles for K.C., and Mike Aviles hit his 5 th HR of the season as the Royals bounced back to split the series with the AL East leading Rays.

Royals Note: It will be an interesting upcoming week for K.C. as the trade deadline comes Thursday. As many as 6 Royals have been mentioned as trade candidates (Jose Guillen, Gil Meche, Zack Greinke, Ron Mahay, Billy Butler, Alex Gordon).
